Lillian Bassman Photography

She helped Richard Avedon launch his career – born in 1917 to jewish parents and grew up in Brooklyn, New York – Worked for Harper’s Bazaar in the 50’s doing fashion photography – abandoned fashion photography in the 70’s and turned to her own photo projects and thus tossed out 40 years of work – in the 90’s her fashion photography was rediscovered as a bag full of negatives was found and she was reappreciated – her works focus on contrast and “the place between the appearance and disappearance of things” (words of Avedon) – she died at age 94 (13.02.12)
